High School Placement

MAY/JUNE 2007
Seventh Grade families who are interested in exploring the private school option should begin to familiarize themselves with independent schools. The following websites will assist you in this process: petersons.com and www.aisne.org. SLA will hold 'High School Placement 101', late May/early June. Topics to be covered are the Admissions Process, Student Life, Financial Aid, Academic and Enrichment possibilities, Testing and Interviewing.

JULY/AUGUST 2007
Seventh Grade Students chosen to attend Steppingstone begin their summer program. Students indicate interest in participating in ISEE/SSAT Prep Course to be offered at SLA beginning September. Diagnostic test will be given during the first week of school.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2007
Eighth grade students and families should begin to research and identify those schools they are interested in applying to. Once schools are identified the following steps should be taken:

PRIVATE and PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS

  1. Identify schools of interest. Attend Independent School Diversity Fair held at the Boys and Girls Club in early October.
  2. Sign up for SSAT Exam online at www.ssat.org. Sign up for in-school test prep class. Certain Parochial Schools require the Catholic School Test. For information pertaining to this, contact the school.
  3. Call Schools of interest for admissions packet, application and financial aid information.
  4. Arrange for an interview/Visit Schools/Ask about any open houses you may attend.
  5. Student and families should call admissions office to request a waiver for the application fee. Once a waiver is granted, families should then send in all preliminary applications to each school.
  6. Students should hand out all recommendations to their teachers and school counselor and begin to write essays.
  7. SLA will offer support to all students writing essays.


BOSTON EXAM SCHOOLS

  1. Students and families fill out registration form for the ISEE test to be taken the first Saturday in November
  2. Student signs up for and attends weekly ISEE prep classes to be offered at SLA
  3. Families receive letters stating where your child will be taking the test.
  4. Students take ISEE
BOSTON CHARTER SCHOOLS

  1. Students and families will attend Charter, Pilot and Public School Forum to be held at SLA in mid November. Attending schools will present information about their schools and provide applications.
  2. All students will fill out all applications with the help of SLA and families. SLA will mail in all applications before deadline. Those students interested in Boston Arts Academy must identify art of interest, attend an audition workshop, and fill out their application by the end of December. Students will be invited to audition in early January 2007.
PILOT SCHOOLS

  1. All Students will fill out applications for Pilot Schools. SLA will provide any and all support to students in filling out their applications. Pilot School applications are usually due by the end of January.
  2. Families must register their students with the North Zone Office, during the month of January. Families will receive information explaining what documents they need to provide and what they need to do by SLA.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS

  1. SLA encourages families to choose as one of their options applying to Another Course to College and Snowden International High School.
  2. Families must register with their zone office (North Zone) and choose ACC as a first choice and Snowden has a second choice.
STEPPINGSTONE

  1. Steppingstone sends information about their programming and requests nominations from school of students who could benefit from their programming.
  2. School Counselor, Teachers, and Staff make recommendations. School Counselor then sends in names of students. Steppingstone contacts family and invites them to an informational meeting.
  3. SLA invites Steppingstone to an evening workshop in December to talk about their programming and to answer questions.
JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH

  1. BPS sends to SLA forms to be filled out by families, asking for in order of preference their choices for the exam schools.
  2. School Counselor sends in GPA's from 7th grade Math and ELA and first trimester grades in Math and ELA.
  3. Families must register their children with Court Street and submit three proofs of residency in the City of Boston.
  4. Families receive invites to exam schools in mid March 2008.
  5. Students must take the SSAT by mid January to be considered for an independent school for September 2008.
  6. Students and families must have completed and sent in all application forms in addition to those for financial aid, no later than January 31, 2008. Teachers and administrators have sent in all recommendations and transcripts.
  7. Charter Schools will hold lottery on March 7, 2008. Families will be alerted to where their children have been accepted.
  8. Families will be notified as to whether their child was accepted at an exam school.
  9. Families who have applied to independent and parochial schools will be notified as to whether your child has been accepted to those schools. At this time families will be notified as to their financial aid package.
  10. SLA assists families in choosing the best placement for their child.
  11. Families begin to notify schools where their child will be attending.
