Community Service Schedule 2010-11

"Do the Right Thing...even if it means you stand alone."

October 2010
        • Grade 8 students are chosen to begin cutting fleece for scarves, a month-long project for November 4th Community Connect
           Day
.
        • October 7: Teachers present overview for the November 4th event:
              
• Grade 6 10:30 -11:00 AM
              
• Grade 7 1:30 - 2:00 PM
              
• Grade 8 12:15 - 12:45 PM

November 2010
        • November 5: Community Connect Day - Students collect Wish Lists from clients in the community.
        • Follow Up Activities:
                • All students turn in Wish Lists and extra supplies to Academy Board member Aimee Southworth.
                • Grade 6: Students begin story web for books which they will write and illustrate for December Gift Giving.
                • Grades 7 & 8: Writing Prompts for Essays: "What is it like to be a resident or a client at my community connects
                   organization?" Students will present essays and participate in the discussion that follows.

December 2010
        • December 10: Dress Down Day - Student brings $3.00 for Community Connection Gift of Giving. Students go gift shopping
           with Academy Board member Aimee Southworth and Academy teacher Chris Coblyn to purchase Wish Lists items. Students
           are chosen to help purchase gifts based on Community Service theme: "Do the right thing...even if it means you stand alone."
        • December 17: Gift Delivery Day - Selected students from each grade deliver gifts to community organizations.
        • December 20: Sharing Circle - Students who delivered gifts share their experiences with rest of school during Morning
           Community Circle.

February 14: Valentine's Day Community Activities
        • Grade 7: Students organize a Valentine's Day Senior Prom with their Community Connect elderly organizations.
                 • Students are responsible for decorations and music, and they join their elderly partners on February 14th for lunch and
                   dancing.
                 • Students write a prompt about their experience with the Senior Prom.
        • Grades 6 & 8: Students will make Valentine's Day cards for delivery to their community service organizations.

June 2010
        • June 3 (rain date: June 6): Community Connect Day: All grades
        • June 7: Community Connect Day Program Evaluation: Students & Staff
