Parents
The administrators, teachers and staff at Smith Leadership Academy encourage parents/guardians to become part of their child's educational experience and the school family. An involved parent/guardian helps his/her child honor his/her commitment to the Academy's high academic, ethical and service standards. We have many ways for you to help the school educate your child. We invite you to join us in this journey.
PowerSchool: At the beginning of each school year, Academy parents receive a username and password to access PowerSchool, an online resource that allows parents to see their child's grades, attendance, teacher assignments & notes, as well as an email account to receive progress reports. PowerSchool also allows parents to communicate with their child's teachers via email.
Parent Leadership Team: Parent activists meet the third Saturday of every month at the school - 6th grade parents at 9:00 a.m., 7th grade parents at 10:00 a.m. and 8th grade parents at 11:00 a.m. (check the school calendar for specific dates). During these meetings, parents plan class events such as Family Math Night, Family Reading Night and Family Movie Night. They also participate in school-wide events/fund raisers such as Harvest Fest in October, holiday dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas and the annual Holiday Bazaar in December. The Academy's Administrative Assistant, Eleanor Chalmus, coordinates parent activities.
Helping Your Child Learn: The Academy surveyed parents/guardians on topics they would like covered in workshops designed to educate them on how to help their children with academic and social issues. The Academy's English Department chair, Sophia Boyer, led the first parent workshop, "Learning How to Write an Accurate Essay", on Saturday, December 19 at the school. Other workshop topics under consideration include Parenting in Middle School Years, Helping Children to Manage Disappointment, Love Limits in Letting Go and Discipline with Respect, to name a few.
